Seriously Ridiculous #8: November Nerd Out

Story fiend. Word nerd. For the comedy curious.

What’s Up?

November. Bonfire Night. Guy Fawkes. Fireworks. I tried to capture this for my US friends, who were like…please explain!

And as you can see, I did a tremendous job…

This was better with my eye cameras.

This was also better with my eye cameras.

You’re welcome. Let’s move swiftly on…

Comedy Craft / Story Fiending

As one of the main revision layers of my novel, Beth Raises Hell, I’ve been homing in on visual details in the Valentine’s Day party scene. Particularly what everyone is wearing—the details of their fancy dress choices—how these contribute to both character and the visual comedy of the scene.

It’s got me thinking about some of my favourite clothing in comedies, and why I love the choices. ….

Fisk’s over-sized brown suit, and Roz’s over-sized hair. (Fisk)

Vinny (Brassic) dressed as a snowman. I couldn’t find an image, but him vaping in it was a perfect twist on the snowman’s pipe.

…And then he had to wear it for a hospital visit. Sweltering. So good.

Do you have any favourites? How are the clothes or costumes adding to the comedy?

The Flip

It’s time for the return of Write Club: an almost silent podcast, where we can work together for 15 minutes. Just bring what you need to write and we’ll settle in and get to it.

Stash: things I love

I enjoyed this weirdly wonderful series. Existential eggs. I still don’t know how to sum up how I felt watching the ending. It was a LOT. In a good way?

If you check it out, let me know if you are also struck by the urge to recreate some of Gudetama’s poses. Very fetching! 😊

And a different vibe, but I rewatched the comedy/drama film Booksmart, and appreciated it more second time around. (I think I was more awake? Literally, not metaphorically.) No wonder Pilar Alessendra recommended it so highly when we chatted in her Comedy Masterclass episode about screenwriting fundamentals. So smart. So genuine. So well-crafted.

AND I’ve just realised one of the scenes that made me laugh the most involved a genius costume idea! Hair masks.

Dare Bears

I am not well informed via media sources or socials, on a daily basis. My friends and family know this, and some have been happy to take on ‘correspondent’ roles—whether it’s for Eurovision, Formula 1, or what Trump is doing with his ballroom. I give them official status, and am always curious about what they share.

This includes my very own nature correspondent. This month updates have included reintroducing pine martens to Dartmoor and Exmoor, evidence to back up my own raccoon prediction (number 16), and now this:

Happy holiday hibernation to all the Greek bears.

So this month, my dare to you is to have fun appointing yourself correspondent. Pick a slice of the world that you’re into, and has you eager to share. And then please do send your note my way! Assume that I’m here for it, but might know nothing….ice hockey…. moon and meteor stuff…What are all the humans, and animals up to? And robots….

I’ll leave you with this…

The stumble. The humans attempts to cover them with a black sheet. All the feels. 😂

Until next time,
