Seriously Ridiculous #11: By the light of the Wormy Moon

Story fiend. Word nerd. For the comedy curious.

What’s Up?

Hello. Feb was…

Lavender lemonade

A breakfast burrito as big as my head

A beautiful Rothko

And a Worm Moon*

* I have been told that a Worm Moon is a call for earthworms to wake up. I don’t know if that’s true, but I like it and am rolling with it. For scientific accuracy, this was actually March 2nd .

(3 of these big and beautiful things were in San Francisco, at the end of a work trip.)

Comedy Craft / Story Fiending

At the SOFMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), I went to the KAWS exhibition. Quite delightful. I think it spoke to my muppet and puppet heart.

Comedy Masterclass listeners might have picked up that I am somewhat obsessed by muppets and puppets. Why it is that they are the ones (outside of my friends and family) who are the most likely to make me laugh out loud.

The closest that I’ve got to understanding why this is true for me, was in my interview with comedy researcher, Caleb Warren.

He said:

‘Something is funny when there's a violation. And this isn't just a moral violation, something that seems wrong, but anything that threatens a person's sense of how the world should be or operate. So that can be something illogical, something that seems incorrect, something that seems physically threatening or threatening to your identity.

When that happens and you're also able to see it as okay, not a big deal, harmless, benign. If you get both of those interpretations at the same time, we argue and we have some data supporting, that's when people experience humour, laughter, amusement, perception that something is funny.’

It makes sense to me that we have different radar and sensitivities here. And mine seem muppet-aligned! So, any favourite muppet/puppet clips send them my way, and thank you.

The Flip

I swear I was going to leave it, but I’m having trouble moving on from the earlier Worm Moon reference. You are now witnessing research in motion…

…Yep, according to the BBC:
The March full Moon is known as the Worm Moon as it refers to when earthworms start to emerge from the soil as the weather warms in springtime.’

So this is my question for you. Which would you rather see, given the opportunity…?

🌕A solo worm, doing a slow-mo transfixing dance. (Think snake-charmer vibe, but with a worm).

🌕A congregation of worms, worm-heads raised to the moon. (Think worm-ravers, minus whistles.)

🌕Option C. Make your own version in your head and press play. Aren’t brains awesome?!

Stash: things I love

With travel and work, and using limited free time to write, I have watched/read very little this month. I actually have a stack of things in my list that look awesome, but that I haven’t got to.

So, let’s play a game where I share a random four, and if you can recommend them, shout at me… MUST WATCH, SO GOOD!

I’ll report back!

Dare Bears

The theme of this month seems to be an Ice-cream Sundae of delight. The little things that tickle my brain and make me laugh—whether that’s muppets or dancing worms.

I am super curious what those things are for you?

I happen to have had an inside peek into what one of those things is for Ryan North—the brilliant writer of games, comic books and more. (Dinosaur Comics, Fantastic Four, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.)

I will say that it involves bears!

(I will also say that he is insightful, super smart, and upholds my world view of Canadians being incredibly kind and awesome.)

Until next time,
